“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission.” Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213
Congratulations, and welcome to your new addition!
Many parents wonder how soon after birth their baby should be baptized. Canon law obliges parents “to take care that infants are baptized in the first few weeks.” It recommends, in fact, that “as soon as possible after the birth or even before it, they are to go to their pastor to request the sacrament and be prepared properly for it.” These guidelines implement Canon law’s requirement.
Given the importance of Baptism, the Church recommends that infants be baptized during the first few weeks after birth, and asks parents and godparents to receive preparation for their attendant spiritual roles. St. Anthony of Padua Parish offers monthly preparation classes and Baptisms according to the attached schedule:
Pre-registration is required for the preparation sessions and for the celebration of Baptism. To register, or for more information, please contact the parish office by phone at 703.820.7111 or by email at email@example.com.
