Food Relief Efforts for Sister Parish in Haiti – A Little Miracle

Dear Donors:

Thank you for all your prayers and financial assistance for our sister parish, Our Lady of Nativity in Gros Marin Haiti. As you are aware by the news, the situation in Haiti has continued to decline. Political unrest, gang killings and kidnappings for ransom have completely disrupted the country sending gas and food prices through the roof and disrupting normal life all over Haiti even in the town of Gros Marin. Father Ingrid had to postpone the opening of the school this year because of the unrest due to the dangers teachers faced on the roads getting to the school. Food is in short supply and what is available is very expensive. Because of this hunger has become a problem. Recently Father Ingrid reached out to us for help to feed the people of his parish. So far, we have been able to send him $4,000 for food. Father sent us the following message after he used the funds, we sent.

“I would like to thank the donors for having shared what they have with the people of Gros Marin who were in great need, this gesture testifies to the fraternity that exists between the parish of St. Anthony of Padua and the parish of Our Lady of the Natividad in Gros Marin, Haiti. Doing the distribution, we left a bag of rice in the house of every person, today rice is a luxury in Haiti. The people express to you, their thanks. I am sending photos which can demonstrate the distribution. Thanks for your great heart. God will return one hundred to one. For your information, 220 families received a bag of rice.  “

Father Ingrid

This is such good news as we were worried about how he would be able to receive the money and if he could find the food he needs in the market. Thanks to all of you that made it possible. We plan to collect additional funds for another food distribution.

Since 1994, St. Anthony of Padua Parish has supported the school of Our Lady of the Nativity Parish in Gros Marin, Haiti. The school provides primary and secondary education for over 350 students, in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Donations from last year were vital in providing for the education of over 350 students and providing them a daily lunch which is usually the only meal they receive. Students were supplied new textbooks, school supplies and teaching materials. Also major repairs were made at school in the rest room facilities, the playground security and new shutters to keep out the rain.

While the school news is positive, the country of Haiti is continuing to experience problems that negatively impact the school. Continued unrest has caused the cost of living to increase causing school operating costs to increase. In addition, the salaries of the teachers are insufficient, and the parents are less able to pay the small fee they pay for school because of the increased food prices. On top of this, Haiti is experiencing a serious drought and the COVID-19 virus which has temporarily closed the school.

The parish Haiti Committee is currently collecting donations to support the school and to help with the current hunger problem brought on by the severe drought Haiti is experiencing. Our target goal this year is $60,000.
